West Wycombe Park, Hill & Village

The Hill overlooks the village, whose buildings span several hundred years, and offers fine views of the Chilterns countryside. The Church, Dashwood Mausoleum and caves are not NT though open to the public. West Wycombe Park is a perfectly preserved rococo landscape garden, created in the mid 18th century by Sir Francis Dashwood, founder of the Dilettanti Society and the Hellfire Club. The 18th century house is amongst the most theatrical and Italianate in England with its façade formed as classical temples. The interior of the house has painted ceilings by Borgnis, pictures, furniture and sculpture dating from Sir Francis’s time. The garden has contemporary temples (recently highlighted on television) and artificial lakes. Join one of the guided tours highlighting the fascinating history of West Wycombe Park and the Dashwood family.
