Auckland Castle

Once principal country residence of the Prince Bishops and now the official residence of the Bishop of Durham. The staterooms and chapel, one of the largest private chapels in Europe, are open to the public. Adjacent Bishop’s Deer Park with 18th Century Deer House.

Bowes Castle 

Massive 12th Century stone keep overlooking the Greta Valley. Built on the site of a Roman fort guarding the approach to Stalnmore Pass.

Durham Castle

Dating from 1072, one of England’s largest surviving Norman castles and grandest Romanesque palaces. Seat of the Prince Bishops until 1832 and now part of a World Heritage Site. Housing University College, Durham University’s foundation college, it is a conference, banqueting and holiday centre in vacations.
