Beamish The North of England Open Air Museum
Winner of both British and European Museum of the Year awards, Beamish is one of the region’s
leading tourist attractions. It vividly recreates life in the North of England in the early 1800s and early
1900s. Costumed staff welcome visitors to The Town, the "drift" mine and Colliery Village, Home Farm,
Pockerley Manor and The 1825 Railway - Pockerley Waggonway with its replica "Locomotion No 1" and "The Steam

The Bowes Museum
Magnificent French-style chateau set in spacious grounds with parterre gardens. Opened in
1892, the museum houses some of the finest collections of European art, textiles, ceramics and furniture in
the country. These are complemented by temporary exhibitions featuring major works of art, some loaned from
international galleries. There is also an acclaimed café and a shop.
