Buckfast Abbey
The home of a Roman Catholic Community of Benedictine monks in Devon, England. The first
monastery was founded in 1018, but was suppressed by Henry VIII in 1539. It was refounded in 1882. The Abbey
Church was rebuilt by the monks themselves. Buckfast now welcomes almost half a million visitors each
year.

Buckland Abbey 
The house has been associated with Sir Francis Drake, started life as a small 13th century
Cistercian Abbey. The present house has the ruins of the abbey as part of its structureThere are National
Trust exhibits of seafaring items from the time of Drake and Grenville. Outside there is a herb garden and
walks through the estate.

Exeter Cathedral
The history of the church as a cathedral dates from 1050 when the Bishop of
Crediton (Devon) and St Germans (Cornwall) moved to Exeter. The cathedral has the longest gothic vault in the
world. With a Shop, restaurant and library.

Hartland Abbey
The lived-in family home of the Stucley family. Although it was built in the 12th century,
remaining as a monastery for 400 years and passing through the female line three times, it has never been
sold. Consequently, it contains collections of pictures, furniture and porcelain which have accumulated over
many generations
