An Introduction to Essex
Essex although part of East Anglia is still considered as one of the Home
Counties of London. There is market gardening for London and some dairy and sheep farming. Oyster fisheries
are also important. Essex was once part of the kingdom of the East Saxons; Roman and Saxon remains can be
found at Colchester and Maldon, which are popular resorts on the coast.
Essex has attractive countryside and villages in the North and on the coast, you will hase
some good days out at traditional seaside resorts such as Southend on sea and Clacton on Sea both being
favourites of Londoners for many years.
Essex has many beautiful villages, especially Finchingfield, Thaxted and Great Bardfield (all
of which have windmills). Coggeshall has some fine medieval buildings, and attractive Burnham-on-Crouch is
lively in summer
Essex is home to Britain’s oldest recorded town, Colchester, with family
attractions here, with an ever-is expanding zoo and the Castle Museum which has hands-on displays which
are a must for children and adults alike. A visit to the Castle prisons will enlighten you as to just how
barbaric life used to be. The spectacular displays of Colchester's early history include the destruction of
Colchester at the hands of Boudica and the Iceni. Displays about medieval and Norman Colchester plus a
display about the siege of Colchester during the English Civil War.
