Mottisfont Abbey & Gardens

Built in the 12th Century as an Augustinian Priory set against the River Test, Mottisfont Abbey is now a house of some note and is surrounded by sweeping lawns with ancient trees. The grounds contain a spring or 'font' from which it derives its name. After the National Trust took over the property, Graham Stuart Thomas designed the rose garden in 1972 to show the National Collection of Old Fashioned Roses, with over 300 varieties. The house itself contains delightful rooms such as the drawing room decorated by Rex Whistler and is home to an interesting collection of 19th and 20th Century pictures donated by painter Derek Hill.
