in 1891. The station with its four massive steam engines, pumped raw sewage to the sewage treatment works at
Beaumont Leys.

Butterfly Farm & Aquatics Centre

Foxton Locks & Incline Plane & Museum
The canal at Foxton is part of a north south link stretching from London to the river Trent.
Foxton Locks opened in August 1814 lifted boats 75 feet 2 inches. The narrow (7 feet wide) locks worked well,
with only horse drawn vehicles for competition. The museum records details of this achievement.

Melton Country Park
140 acres of parkland, easily accessible from the town. A section of the ‘Jubilee Way’ (a

Moira Furnace
Early 19 century blast furnace which has been expertly preserved by English Heritage as a
scheduled monument. The building itself houses touchscreens, hands-on interactives and displays showing how

Stonehurst Family Farm
The farm has a wide range of animals all available to be stroked and handled by children.

Swannington Heritage Trail
Swannington Village Trail includes part of one of the world’s earliest railways, sites showing
the routes of ancient horse-drawn tramways and of mining activities going back 800 years. Hough Mill is an
early nineteenth-century tower mill, which fell into disrepair after 1910 but has recently been restored.
Inside, its displays show how the mill was once used.

Swannington Windmill
A tower mill, built by Mr. Griffin at the end of the 18th century, on the boundary between
Swannington and Thringstone, replaced an earlier post mill sited nearby. Recently restored the mill became
winners of Leicestershire County Council's Award for Independent Museums 2000.
