With its 12th-century keep, Tudor mansion and spectacular earthworks cut from solid rock, a
new visitor centre and exciting displays explore 900 years of changing lifestyles, habits and military

The Castle ruins provide spectacular views across the River Nidd and also the ruins of a
royal castle which was rebuilt in the 14th century. In 1170 the assassins of Thomas Becket apparently fled
to this castle. One can view the Keep open in the summer season, plus the underground Sallyport and the
Old Courthouse.

Built shortly after 1066, this is the best preserved castle of such a scale in Britain with
a superb keep and amazing views of the River Swale. There is an exhibition and a contemporary garden show

The Castle has been home to the Ingilby family for twenty-six generations and built in the
mid 14 th century. The Old Tower dates from 1555 and contains armour, books, panelling and a Priest's
Secret Hiding Hole, together with fine paintings, china and furnishings collected by the family over the
Centuries. The grounds at Ripley have a deer park, lakes, woodland walks, and Victorian Walled
Gardens - home to the National Hyacinth Collection. The recently restored Hot Houses has an extensive
tropical plant collection, whilst the Kitchen gardens are home to rare vegetables from the Henry Doubleday
Research Institute.
Over 900 years old, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval
castles in England and once home to the famous Clifford Lords. Fully roofed, it is an excellent
place to explore with a Dungeon, Watch Tower, Chapel and the Conduit Court. With fine views over the town
and woods.
