Wroughton Science Museum
A storage facility for the National Collections of the Science
Museum. These artefacts are stored at Wroughton, and known as ’objects’ in the Museum world, are the
LARGE objects from the whole spectrum of collections of scientific and technological interest. These range
from very big objects such as the enormous Lockheed Constellation airliner and early computers, to very heavy
objects such as the Wood Press (140 tonnes) and early MRI scanners.
The collections are stored in seven hangars on the airfield site. The collections of wide appeal, such as the Air
Transport collection and the Land Transport collection, are stored so that they may be viewed easily by the public,
with most objects labelled and in easy view. The more ’eclectic’ objects are stored in racking as in a warehouse to
conserve space, and these are open to the public on occasional open weekends.
